    • Christian gnostics remained in the threshold of the Church, leading often to inner conflicts. They professed a theory of division of mankind which allowed them such behavior. This theory is common to several hierarchichal societies, and it proceeds by means of two dichotomical divisions: a) subjets somhow integrated and subjects wholly non-integrated; b) the first are further subdivided in subjects fully integrated and subjects partially integrated. The paper deals with four exernples: hinduism, the Platonic republic, freemasonry and gnosticism. The valentinian gnostics sustained a division into hylics or materials (the wholly outsiders), psychics (the partially in) and pneumatics or spirituals (the wholly integrated). To each status corresponds a different approach to the Scripture: literal, moral, allegorical. The second part of the paper illustrates with the backing of valentinian texts the further trichotomical division into earth-dwellers, ogdoadic and pleromatic, corresponding to similar further divisions in the parallel exemples.
