The professional life of José Antonio Jiménez Salas was closely linked to the establishment of the Spanish Society for Rock Mechanics which he would represent at this time. The society had been recently launched alongside others in neighbouring countries, to further an, as yet, incipient knowledge but one which would have to meet the great challenges posed by the civil engineering of the day. In the 1960s and in the absence of theoretical concepts and calculation tools, the intrinsic risks posed by new construction made it necessary to conduct field testing on a scale that has never been repeated in Spain or anywhere else in the world ever since.
