The success and experience reached by Haneda's Monorail with double rail, which in 14 years of uninterrupted commercial transport in Tokyo, has transported more than three hundred thousand passengers and the Osaka Monorail which was transporting daily almost two hundred thousand passengers were the reason why the Japanese Government approved a law in completely urban monorails in city centres. As a result, cities like Kita-Kyushu, Naha, Kumamoto, Gifu, Chiba among others, have formed their projects and have applied for the appropriate administrative authorisations. The Kita-Kyushu project -closely followed by that of Naha- is the most advanced and its construction has already begun. This article describes the antecedents and the characteristics of the line which will be the backbone of the urban transport in this city of more than a million inhabitants.
