The electric brake, after an initial period of development, has for some twenty years occupied a large field of application: the world of the railway. Numerous and diverse reasons guarantee the usage of the electric brake within the modern railway and of these, above all, the safety that it offers.
The electric brake carries out all the functions of any other brake, that is: service braking, maintenance braking and complementary braking. This type of braking may be rheostatic of recovery. The analysis of these types, within the nature of the electric brake gives us the benefits and disadvantages of each system. It is worthwhile pointing out that the system of the three-phase convertor with asynchronic engine is the cheapest per year, although its initial cost may be higher and it also requires more specialized personnel. All the systems based on the usage of tiristors give some much more purified functioning characteristics than the conventional equipments. This improvement is achieved through and increase in the weight and price of the equipment. However, their use is growing in all administrations. This tendency will be speeded up in the future: in short term, motors of continuous current with chopper equipment and long term, motors of induction with convertor.
