Relatos de los orígenes en la Atenea Parthenos: Iconología de Erecteo y Pandora

    En la estatua criselefantina del Parthenón aparecían simbolizados dos relatos de los orígenes: El de la humanidad sexuada, representado por Pandora, y el de la estirpe ateniense, contenido en la figura de Erecteo. La inclusión de la serpiente ctónica se relaciona extrechamente con el programa iconográfico del Partenón, monumento que exalta las virtudes cívicas y los mitos vernáculos. Sin embargo, la introducción de Pandora, que remite a tradiciones helénicas más amplias, resulta más problemática de dilucidar en este contexto. Postulamos aquí que la figura de Pandora está estrechamente relacionada con los mitos de autoctonía y que su figura es una contra-imagen de esta pretensión ateniense. Pandora personifica el origen mítico de la humanidad del que Atenas puede despegarse apelando al mito de Erecteo, de modo que se construye otro genos diferente y superior al resto. Atenas se eleva desde los mismos orígenes, desde Erecteo, por sobre la estirpe de Pandora.

    In the Chryselephantine statue of the Parthenon two stories about the origins were symbolized: The first one was the beginning of the sexed humanity, represented by Pandora; the other story refers to the origin of the Athenian genos. The inclusion of the chthonic serpent had an intimate connection with the iconographic program of the Parthenon, a monument that celebrated the civic values and vernacular myths. However, the introduction of Pandora refers to broader Hellenic traditions, posing a more problematic question to be elucidated within this context. We postulate that the figure of Pandora is related to the myths of autochthony, and that she represents a counterimage of this Athenian claim. Pandora personifies the mythical origins of mankind, and Athenians separate themselves from this breed by appealing to the myth of Erechtheus, therefore they can build a different and superior genos. Athens rises from the very beginning, right from Erechtheus, above the line of Pandora.
