Background: The objective of this study was to analyze the risk factors behind hospital admissions caused by non-adherence and to describe the clinical and economic consequences.
Method: A retrospective, case-control study. Socio-demographic factors, causes of hospitalization, diagnoses, substance abuse and treatment-related factors, hospital stay and health costs were assessed.
Results: The case group: 87 patients (104 admissions). Control group: 190 patients.Related-factors to non-adherence hospital admission were: under 60 years of age [Odds Ratio (OR) 6.4; 95% CI: 3.8-11.1], mental illness (OR 9.7; 95% CI: 4.7-20),substance abuse (OR 4.8; 95% CI: 2.9-8) or lived alone (OR 3.2; 95% CI: 1.6-6.6). Hospital stay was longer for the case group patients but the cost for the health system was similar in both cases.
Conclusions: The risk factors identified in this study provide a starting point to formulate and prioritize.strategies that would improve adherence in ambulatory patients
