Resumen de Comment: Why Canada?

Siobhan Lismore-Scott

  • Anyone who has visited Vancouver will recognise the scene on the front cover of this month's Industrial Minerals (IM). The shot shows Canada's natural beauty, as well as exemplifying the challenging terrain mining companies have to work in. The totem pole signifies the importance of working with Canada's First Nations communities. In fact, this is something which has been emphasised again and again when speaking to companies who work in Canada.

Provincial governments are, on the whole, supportive of the mining industry. And companies have found ways of working with - and for - the local communities where they are developing a project. As Tom Paterson, Fednav's senior vice-president for ship owning, Arctic, and projects, told IM, when discussing Fednav's operations in the Arctic (see p45): "The most important thing about operating in the Arctic is that you must work hand in hand with the local people and keep them appraised".
