Faculty from seven Western community colleges comprising the FLASH consortium, supported by a grant from NSF's Adopt and Adapt program, are collaborating to improve the success rate of students in general chemistry. The project's primary focus has been to enhance chemistry instruction by adopting and adapting Web-deliverable materials and active learning approaches from the molecular Science Project. Tools including guided inquiry activities and labs, interactive Explorations, Mastering Chemistry Web version (MCWeb), and Calibrated Peer Review (CPR) have been adopted. Preliminary results including a comparison of FLASH students' performance with those in control groups and students' feedback regarding materials are encouraging.
