Through the reconstruction of the Greek tradition of the fable Aesopic you can grasp the degree of originality of Phaedrus in comparison with the model. The fable of fox and tragic mask is not an original invention of Phaedrus, but the new terminology adopted by the latin fabulist connects the fable with his time and turns it into a instrument of controversy with the public passion for tragic theatre. This tale is also a suitable opportunity for the poet to claim the celebrity for himself that he ever denied.
