  • The verb at the beginning of the v. 55 of Lock of Berenice is partly concealed by a gap, so only the final part -ασε can be certainly read. E. Lobel was inclined to read ἔσπασε, with exclusively palaeographical motivations. This reading is here supported by passages drawn above all from the Historia animalium of Aristotle.
