En este artículo, publicado en la revista Lápiz a finales de los ochenta, Gerardo Mosquera avanza algunas de las preocupaciones presentes en textos de la época en torno a la relación entre las artes del Tercer Mundo y la cultura occidental. Junto a la reflexión sobre la problemática derivada de la situación de las culturas periféricas en el momento en que negocian su inserción en el Mainstream, el autor señala que sólo a partir de la apropiación y reinterpretación de la cultura occidental por el resto del globo se podrá alcanzar un panorama verdaderamente internacional.

In this article, published in Lapiz Journal at the end of the 80s, Gerardo Mosquera outlines some of the thoughts present in his text of that period concerning the relation between the arts of the Third World and Western Cultures. Besides reflecting on the problems arising of the situation of peripheral cultures when they negotiate their insertion in the Mainstream, the author points out that only from appropriation and reinterpretation of Western culture by the rest of the globe may be achieved a truly international artistic panorama.
