    The text proposes a clash of Freud and Pfister concerning psychoanalysis and religion. Whereas for Freud religion equals to dream and illusion, for Pfister, based on his text “The illusion of a future”, the “Shepherd of Souls” questions Freudian scheme of religion. For Pfister, realistic thinking and desire are not illusions and must live along in different dimensions of life, including science. For Freud, illusion will always be needed to accommodate our constitutive helplessness. The authors conclude that for psychoanalysis what is important is to understand the underlying reasons of religious beliefs and disbeliefs. Every speech, including the religious one is human. Regardless of being neurotic or sublime, it is subjected to unconscious determinations.

    O texto propõe um embate entre Freud e Pfister acerca da psicanálise e da religião. Se, para Freud, a religião se iguala a um sonho e a uma ilusão, na busca do homem pelo pai protetor, para Pfister, em A ilusão de um futuro, o “pastor das almas” questiona o esquema freudiano da religião. Para Pfister, o pensamento realista e o desejo não são ilusões e devem conviver com as muitas dimensões da vida, inclusive com a ciência. Para Freud, a ilusão sempre será necessária para acolher nosso desamparo constitutivo. Os autores concluem que, para a psicanálise, o importante é compreender os motivos latentes de nossas crenças e descrenças religiosas. Todo discurso, incluindo a religioso, é um discurso humano que, independentemente de ser neurótico ou sublime, está submetido à determinações inconsciente.
