Diagnóstico de la enfermedad periodontal basado en la respuesta del huésped

    Actualmente, es bien sabido que son bacterias específicas las responsables del inicio y progresión de la enfermedad periodontal, y que la destrucción tisular ocurre como consecuencia de un desequilibrio entre los factores protectores del huésped y los mecanismos destructivos iniciados por el proceso infeccioso. Aunque un cierto porcentaje de la población se muestra susceptible a la periodontitis, también hay individuos que se muestran resistentes a padecer formas severas de la enfermedad. Por todo ello, parece razonable estudiar la respuesta del huésped frente a la agresión para poder detectar de manera precoz formas de susceptibilidad individual o resistencia a la periodontitis. La aplicación de métodos de diagnóstico rápidos y simples basados en el análisis del fluido crevicular nos proporciona información sobre la respuesta inmune celular y humoral del paciente, facilitando una detección precoz de los pacientes de riesgo y permitiendo instaurar el tratamiento adecuado en fases tempranas de la enfermedad.

    It is well known today that specific bacteria are responsible for the start and progression of periodontal disease, and that tissue destruction takes place consequent to an imbalance between the host’s protective factors and the destructive mechanisms initiated by the infectious process. Although a certain percentage of the population is seen to be susceptible to periodontitis, there are also individuals who are resistant to severe forms of the disease.

    Thus, it seems reasonable to study the host response to the aggression in the interest of early detection of individual forms of susceptibility or resistance to periodontitis. The use of fast, simple diagnostic methods based on an analysis of the gingival crevicular fluid gives us information about the patient’s cellular and humoral immune response, facilitating early detection of patients at risk and making it possible to start appropriate treatment in early phases of the disease.
