Evaluations were analysed that were conducted on 146 patients (53 men and 93 women), from 16 to 82 years of age, of the intraoperating pain that they felt during the treatment of the root canals performed in two private dental clinics. The evaluation of the intensity of the pain was done using an analogical-visual quantitative scale. Fifty-three percent of the patients did not feel any pain, with the women showing a lower percentage of absence of pain (p<0.05). A difference of 16 percentage points was observed between the pain evaluation as absent in the patients over 35 years of age (61%) and of those under that age (45%) (p<0.05). The percentage of patients that did not feel pain was greater in the upper arch (59%) than in the lower (47%), although the evaluation of the pain as slight was significantly greater in the lower arch (43%) in comparison with the upper (27%) (p<0.05). For dental sectors, the treatments carried out on teeth in the anterior sector were less painful (66% of absence of pain) than those of the back sector (40% of absence of pain) (p<0.05). The treatments in multiradicular teeth were more painful than those carried out on uniradicular teeth (p<0.05). The percentage of patients that did not feel pain decreased as the duration of the intervention increased, stabilising from 90 minutes. The percentage of patients that felt slight pain increased progressively with the duration of the intervention, reaching the maximum at ninety minutes.
