Renditions of Faithfulness; from Jorge Calvetti’s Poetry to Gustavo Fontán’s Films.

    Cineasta sensible y original, Gustavo Fontán se ubica más allá de la transposición clásica, para aproximarse a los poetas y recrear sus estéticas, sus obsesiones, sus atmósferas. Así lo ha hecho con Jacobo Fijman, Juan L. Ortiz y Jorge Calvetti – por nombrar sólo algunos -. En el presente trabajo me propongo indagar El paisaje invisible, mediometraje en el que Fontán nos acerca a Calvetti. Analizaré entonces, las estrategias propias del lenguaje fílmico a las que apela Fontán para plasmar el imaginario y la estética de este poeta y me preguntaré por la conjunción de las poéticas de ambos artistas. Por último, una breve aclaración sobre el título del trabajo, surgido de un pensamiento de Calvetti: “Toda inspiración nace con su propia forma o con sus propias formas. Un mismo tema puede ser escrito como relato o en verso. ¿Por qué no? Son diversas maneras de ser fiel.” También el cine constituye – en mi opinión - una de esas maneras.

    An original and sensitive filmmaker, Gustavo Fontán goes beyond classic transpositions to venture into a poet’s obsessions, aesthetic and atmospheres. He has done so with the work of Jacobo Fijman, Juan L. Ortiz and Jorge Calvetti – to name just a few. In this paper I intend to explore El paisaje invisible, a short film by Fontán that brings us closer to Calvetti. I will focus on the director’s strategies – characteristic of the cinematographic language - that convey the poet’s mythical world and aesthetic, and I will analyze the union of both artists’ poetics. Finally, I would like to offer a brief explanation of the title of this article, which is drawn from a reflection by Calvetti: “All inspiration is born with its own form or forms. The same subject can be written as a narrative or in verse. Why not? They are different renditions of faithfulness.” I believe cinema is another rendition.
