    This article is dedicated to the understanding of what is read the Bible as literature. We present two moments in the recent history of Bible reading that seem crucial to the definition of this form of reading. The two moments were the publications of two important works that approached the biblical texts from a literary perspective, differing from traditional approaches, religious and exegetical, and influencing the next generations. The first of these two works was Mimesis: The Representation of Reality in Western Literature by Erich Auerbach, originally published in 1946, the other was The Art of Biblical Narrative by Robert Alter, original 1981. We examine some of the main contributions of these two authors for the Bible studies and try to demonstrate that there is a thematic dependence between their works, then list the main assumptions of this way of reading the Bible today, and defend the hypothesis that religious mediation still dividing the Bible studies.

    Este artigo é dedicado à compreensão do que é ler a Bíblia como literatura. Nós apresentaremos dois momentos na história recente da leitura bíblica que aos nossos olhos parecem decisivos para a definição dessa forma de ler. Os dois momentos que selecionamos foram as publicações de duas obras importantes que abordaram os textos bíblicos a partir de uma perspectiva literária, diferindo das abordagens tradicionais, religiosas e exegéticas, e influenciando fortemente as próximas gerações. A primeira dessas duas obras foi Mimesis: A Representação da Realidade na Literatura Ocidental do crítico alemão Erich Auerbach, publicada originalmente em 1946; a outra foi A Arte da Narrativa Bíblica do norte-americano Robert Alter, original de 1981. Examinaremos algumas das maiores contribuições desses dois autores para os estudos bíblicos e procuraremos demonstrar a dependência temática que há entre suas obras, para daí enumerar os principais pressupostos dessa forma de ler a Bíblia na atualidade, e defender a hipótese de que a mediação religiosa continua dividindo os estudos bíblicos.
