    Cuando un individuo o un colectivo social abandonan por la fuerza del hambre sus diferentes lugares de origen y se enfrentan a realidades inciertas creadas por una modernidad subordinada como la que se vive en la frontera norte de México, sus identidades sociales se debilitan, se hacen fluctuantes, difusas. Tal es el caso de los trabajadores de la industria maquiladora de exportación; la pérdida paulatina de sus tradiciones y su cotidiano enfrentamiento a una realidad ambigua que se transforma en fenómenos ambivalentes, híbridos, repercute directamente sobre su identidad: deja de ser lo que era y los procesos sociales en que se inserta le impiden ser lo que debiera. Por cuestiones de espacio, me veo obligado a reducir el análisis de la identidad del obrero de la maquila a la relación que establece con la organización sindical que supuestamente lo representa.

    When and individual or a social collective leave —due to hunger— their different places of origin and face the uncertain realities created by a subordinated modernity (such as the one in the northern border of Mexico), their social identities weaken and become diffuse. Such is the case of the maquiladora industry; the gradual loss of their traditions as well as their daily confrontation to an ambiguous reality that becomes ambivalent, directly affects their doomed identity and the social processes stop it from being what it should. Because of the lack of space, this article focuses more on the relationship of the worker with the union than on the worker himself.
