  Since it interrupts every minimal possibility of social struggle, the suicide of the worker is commonly con­sidered by both the media and the trade unions as an apolitical act. Taking the recent suicide of a Belgian metallurgist as a starting point, this article questions the approach of the suicide as a pathologic reaction, by first considering this fatal act as a part of an active and mili­tant historiography (the disappearance thus becomes paradoxically a way of preserving a memory) ; second by understanding this self-destructive and solitary act as an action of reconstruction and reappropriation of a collective identity, the latter being exactly the target of a social violence the worker tries to deal with in a constructive way.

  En tant qu’il entraîne la fin de tout engagement, le suicide de l’ouvrier apparaît a priori comme l’acte de lutte le plus dépolitisé, tant dans les discours média­tiques que syndicaux. Partant du suicide d’un ouvrier métallurgiste du bassin sidérurgique liégeois, cet article entend passer outre à cette dépolitisation en réinscri­vant d’abord l’engagement fatal du corps de l’ouvrier dans une écriture active de l’histoire – la disparition se fait alors paradoxalement antidote contre l’oubli – ; en envisageant ensuite cet engagement autodestructeur et solitaire du corps comme un geste de reconstruction et de réappropriation d’une identité collective contestée par la violence sociale à laquelle le suicidaire tente d’apporter une ultime réponse.
