  • The reconstruction of the Church of Santa Barbara dei Librai in Rome (1679-1688): the patron Zenobio Masotti and artistic activity of Agostino Martinelli, Giuseppe Passari, Luigi Garzi and Domenico Guidi.

Around 1680, the Church of Santa Barbara of the "Confraternita e Università dei Librai" (booksellers confraternity and university) in Rome was the object of a major restoration campaign. Among the various artists involved in work at the site, which was funded by the Florentine bookseller Zenobio Masotti, were the architects Agostino Martinelli and Giuseppe Passari, the painter Luigi Garzi and the sculptor Domenico Guidi. The scope of the article is to bring to light several aspects of the 1680 restoration, with the additional help of newly discovered sources that add to our knowledge of the figure of Giuseppe Passari. As well, the architectural vicissitudes, role of patronage, some aspects of the iconography of the paintings by Garzi, and the dating of Masotti's sepulchral monument by Domenico Guidi are treated.
