Lavinia Fontana: her first 'Self-portrait at the Virginal' rediscovered, and a short analysis of the painter's self-portraits.
The first "Self-portrait at the Virginal" by Lavinia Fontana, signed and dated 1575, had up to now been considered lost. Its existence was known, however, through the meticulous description in the 1659 inventory of the Archduke Willhelm of Austria, in which the entire inscription on the painting, including the signature and date, was recorded.
The work reappeared on the art market in 2004 and now claims its place as the earliest self-portrait by the Bolognese painter, dating to the period of her artistic debut.
By emphasizing the historical value of the rediscovery, in this article the author examines what is presently known about the artist's self-portraits ans about copies of these produced in the course of the Seventeenth and Eighteenth centuries, attempting through stylistic analyses and comparisons to distinguish the copies from the originals.
