  • The article focuses on a statement by former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott concerning the legal and social status of indigenous peoples in Australia. Topics discussed include their to maintain a connection to their land and culture, the adoption of the United Nations (UN) Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) by the UN General Assembly in September 2007, and the efforts made by Abbott to prevent the forced closure of remote Aboriginal communities in the region
