    Al llarg del segle XIX, la ciutat de Barcelona va veure l’aparició d’una gran quantitat de professionals amb un perfil heterodox i polièdric. En aquest sentit, Alexandre Planella i Roura, membre d’una prolífica nissaga d’artistes, esdevingué un dels models més representatius de l’activitat patrimonial vuitcentista. Lluny d’adoptar el model de l’especialista, Planella desplegà la seva activitat en un sentit multidireccional. Després d’uns quants anys d’aprenentatge artístic a l’escola de Llotja, principal centre formatiu barceloní, va mantenir la tradició familiar obrint una botiga de material artístic. Ara bé, va ser el treball de restaurador, com una disciplina emergent, amb intervencions en béns patrimonials importants, l’ocupació que més el va ajudar a adquirir reputació social. Simultàniament, la curiositat el dugué a practicar el conreu d’un col·leccionisme eclècticque, amb el pas dels anys, es dirigí cap a l’aplec d’obra gràfica: estampes i dibuixos.

    Throughout the nineteenth century, the city of Barcelona saw the emergence of a large number of multi-faceted and heterodox professionals. In this sense, Alexandre Planella i Roura, member of a prolific lineage of artists, became one of the most representative models of 19th-century estate art collecting. Far from adopting the specialist model, Planella carried out his activity in a multidirectional way. After some years studying art at the Llotja School of Fine Arts, the principal centre of learning in Barcelona in that period, he continued his family’s tradition and opened an art supply shop. His work as a restorer, an emerging discipline at that time, and the opportunity to intervene in important estates, contributed significantly to consolidating his social reputation. Planella Roura’s curiosity also led him to collect eclectic pieces of art, which, over time, resulted in a collection of graphic works comprising prints and drawings.
