  • "We want to eliminate our need for rare earths," Schulz said. "My objective is simply to secure the cheapest and most stable supply of raw materials." Japanese car-maker Nissan joined the reduction drive in November when it said it had developed an electric motor to power an updated version of Nissan's Leaf EV, which used 40% less dysprosium than conventional EV motors.

    HEVT is part of a team, joined by the University of Texas and a California-based company, General Atomics, which is trying to design better-performing motors for EVs without rare earths, funded by a $3m grant from the US Department of Energy's ARPA-E programme.
