  • south west EnglandThe last independent UK kaolin producer disappeared this month as Imerys SA announced the acquisition of Goonvean's kaolin activities in Cornwall.

    Goonvean's kaolin operations are anticipated to be merged with Imerys' existing structure into a unified production platform, although this won't be for at least another several months, a company spokesperson told IM.

    Vale divested its Brazilian subsidiary (PPSA) to [Imerys] on 26 July 2010 for $70m, and Imerys has concentrated its paper coating kaolin supply base in Brazil by switching main production from the UK to its Imerys Rio Capim Caulim (IRCC) operations in Para, Brazil, with a capacity of 1.6m tpa.
