  • According to this study:

    * Some older patients with pneumonia appear to be admitted to the ICU rather than to a general unit merely because they live near a hospital with a high ICU admission rate.

    * Despite their seemingly arbitrary assignation to the ICU, these “borderline” patients may have greater survival rates without creating a higher cost burden.
