    This contribution reconstructs the history of movable books, books created for a wide range of different purposes (teaching, mnemonics, play, divining, etc.) including mechanical or paratextual devices demanding or soliciting the interaction of the reader. The investigation runs from hand-written books to the most courageous paper-engineering experiments of the 20th century Avant-Garde, considering some specific editorial genres, including calendars, “libri di sorti”, anatomical books, navigation handbooks etc., and animated children's books. In particular, it demonstrates how the happy season for animated paper production and publishing of the 19th century would not have been possible without the scientific inheritance of optical studies and vision sciences, precursors a short time before the invention of the Lumière brothers (1895). The study also examines some literary works using combinatorial mechanisms, experimenting the semiotic potential of expressive codes and very different techniques and materials: the reference is to books of Futurism and Dadaism, the "artists' book", and other avant-garde texts from the second half of the 20th century.

    Il contributo ricostruisce la storia dei movable book, cioè di quei manufatti librari, creati con finalità di fruizione assai dissimili tra loro (didattiche, mnemoniche, ludiche, divinatorie ecc.) e che includono dispositivi meccanici o paratestuali, che richiedono e sollecitano l’interazione del lettore. L’indagine si estende dal libro manoscritto fino alle più ardite sperimentazioni cartotecniche delle avanguardie storiche del Novecento e prende in esame alcune specifiche tipologie editoriali, come i calendari, i “libri di sorti”, i libri anatomici, i manuali di navigazione ecc., fino ai libri animati per l’infanzia. In particolare, si mostra come la fortunata stagione editoriale e manifatturiera della carta animata dell’Ottocento non sarebbe stata possibile se non fosse stata raccolta l’eredità scientifica degli studi di ottica e di scienza della visione, che precorrono di poco l’invenzione dei fratelli Lumière (1895). Lo studio esamina inoltre alcune creazioni letterarie che utilizzano meccanismi combinatori e sperimentano le potenzialità semiotiche di codici espressivi, di tecniche e materiali assai diversi tra loro: il riferimento è al libro futurista, a quello dadaista, al “libro d’artista”, e ad testi dell’avanguardia del secondo Novecento.
