Resumen de Religión y poder: Conflictos entre clérigos y laicos en la formación de la sociedad canaria

Este artículo analiza las disputas entre laicos y eclesiásticos durante la colonización del archipiélago canario, en especial durante el último tercio del siglo XV y el primero del siglo XVI. Su hilo conductor es el papel que ambos grupos se arrogaban en la dirección de la “comunidad”, con los consiguientes privilegios y preeminencias.
El resultado final era fruto del arbitraje real, que buscaba el equilibrio entre las partes y el aumento de su papel rector en el reino.

This paper analyzes the disputes among seculars and ecclesiastics during the colonisation of the Canary Islands, especially during the last third of the 15th century and the first decades of the 16th century. The main theme is the role that both arrogated to themselves in favour of the “community”, with the consequent privileges and preeminences.
The final result was the effect of the royal arbitrage, which sought harmony among the parties and the increase of its leading role in the kingdom.
