    ABSTRACT: Before the inauguration in 1929 of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), there had already been another Museum of Modern Art. This museum was called Société Anonyme-Museum of Modern Art 1920. The year -1920- was added as an indication after 1929 to highlight the starting date of a story that had not to be misunderstood. Since then and until 1950, the Société Anonyme became an essential historical and cultural reference for American and International Art. The birth of the MoMA itself had many relations with this small society of artists. Within a few years the Société Anonyme also collected an extraordinary compilation of works that later –between 1940s and 1950s– became the fund of the most significant art collections of the American museums.This essay examines some of the aspects that typify the history and function of the Société Anonyme in New York in 1920, in which Katherine S.Dreier (1877-1952), Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968) and Man Ray (1890-1976) started actually this radical experiment on the 29th of April.

    Prima che il Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) inaugurasse la sua apertura nel 1929, un altro Museum of Modern Art era già esistito. Si chiamava Société Anonyme-Museum of Modern Art 1920, dove il 1920 era un’indicazione aggiunta proprio dopo il 1929 per sottolineare la data di inizio di una storia che non doveva essere equivocata. Da allora e fino al 1950, la Société Anonyme divenne un riferimento storico e culturale fondamentale per l’arte americana e internazionale. La stessa nascita del MoMA avrebbe avuto non poche relazioni con questa piccola società di artisti. In pochi anni la Société Anonyme raccolse inoltre un patrimonio straordinario di opere poi divenute la base delle collezioni americane museali più significative tra gli anni Quaranta e Cinquanta. Questo saggio vuole soffermarsi su alcuni aspetti che caratterizzarono la storia e il ruolo della Société Anonyme nella New York del 1920 dove Katherine S. Dreier (1877-1952), Marcel Duchamp(1887-1968) e Man Ray (1890-1976) davano infatti inizio (il 29 aprile) a questo esperimento radicale.
