  • Resumen
    • An illumination by Bartolomeo Gossi from Gallarate and an unknown portrait of cardinal Niccoló Albergati.

This contribution focuses on a Lombard illumination depicting a "Carthusian cardinal" (London, British Library, Add. 18197f). It was painted in miniature around the sixties of the 15th century by the illuminator Bartolomeo Gossi da Gallarate, a leading figure in the Milanese art circle over the second half of the century. Looking at the prelate face, depicted with sensitive care, great similities are to be found with the official portraiture of the Carthusian monk and Bolognese bishop Niccolò Albergati. More specifically, this illumination is compared with "The procession of San Girolamo confraternity with blessed Niccolò Albergati and Stefano Agazzati" (Bern, Kunstmuseum, inv. nº G 0210), anonymous painting dated at the end of the 15th century. The comparision shows how the illumination by Gossi can be identified as the oldest portrait of Niccolò Albergati, who died in 1443.
