Il faut dire que, comparativement à leurs homologues nord-américains, on peut se demander s'il existe vraiment des masques en Amazonie. Pourtant, à y regarder de plus près, il y a incontestablement matière à réflexion. Penser les rituels, les chants et les esprits katukina (État d'Amazonas, Brésil) à partir des masques offre une perspective qui interroge la notion même de masque et ses significations. Il semble que l'on ne puisse se contenter d'une narration cosmologique selon laquelle le masque octroierait un « corps » à l'esprit céleste. Ainsi un masque katukina n'annule pas son porteur : lors du rituel, ce dernier doit être reconnu.

Jérémy Deturche, Beyond the Mask. Singers and Spirits in Katukina Rituals in Biá (Amazonas, Brazil) Amazonian masks have until recently suffered from a lack of anthropological interest. Thus, in comparison with their North American counterparts, one might well ask if there really are masks in the Amazon. Yet if we take a closer look, there is unquestionably food for thought. To reflect upon Katukina rituals, songs and spirits in relation to the masks (in the State of Amazonas, Brazil) offers a perspective that questions the very notion of a mask and its meanings. Here, it seems unsatisfactory to resort to a cosmological narrative according to which the mask would lend a �body� to the celestial spirit. For a katukina mask does not displace its bearer: the latter must be recognized as a constituent part of the ritual.
