Cuando una actividad profesional se desenvuelve con normalidad es fácil olvidarse de cómo fueron sus comienzos, sin embargo, el futuro necesita del conocimiento del pasado para continuar su progresión y desarrollo. En este trabajo volvemos un siglo atrás para rememorar los antecedentes histórico-legales, que constituyen el arranque de una fructífera y variada profesión, que continúa evolucionando en cuanto a sus perfiles profesionales. Se hace una revisión del ambiente socio-económico-cultural en el último tercio del siglo XIX en España, que ciertas decisiones políticas y legislativas ayudaron a configurar, con la primera ley para la educación física, la Ley de 9 de Marzo de 1883, creando la Escuela Central de profesores y profesoras de gimnástica en Madrid.

When a professional activity has a normal development, it does too easy forget how the beginning of it was. However, the future needs the knowledge of the past for continuing the progression and development. In this research, we return a century ago to recall the historical-legal background. It constitutes the beginning of a fruitful and varied profession that continues evolution about their professional profiles. It is done a review about social-economic-cultural in he last third of the 19th century in Spain that some political and legislative decisions help to set up. One of them was the first law about Physical Education, the Act of 9th March in 1883, which was creating the Central School of Gymnastic´s teachers.
