Definition of the chronological framework within which the Emar documentation was written depends mainly on interpretation of the two compositional formats observed since the publication of the texts by D. Arnaud. Until now, analysis has envisioned either that the two types of tablets coexisted fully or that one followed the other consecutively. A middle road is proposed here: that of an overlap through an interval of uncertain duration; and one that echoes the existence of two legal and institutional circles enbedded within the same political entity constituted by the city of Emar.

La fixation du cadre chronologique dans lequel s’inscrit la documentation d’Emar repose principalement sur l’interprétation des deux formats de sources observés dès la publication des textes par D. Arnaud. Jusqu’ici, les analyses présumaient soit la coexistence soit la consécution des deux types de tablettes. Il est proposé ici une voie médiane : celle d’un chevauchement pendant une période dont la durée est difficile à évaluer, et qui fait écho à l’existence de deux cercles juridiques et institutionnels imbriqués à l’intérieur de la même entité politique constituée par la cité d’Emar.
