Un proyecto central en la formación moderna de Cartagena. La estación ferroviaria como rótula entre barrios (1896, 1900-1906, 2006)

    La elaboración de una adecuada articulación entre ferrocarril y ciudad -centralidad de la estación y relación con/entre los barrios de su entorno-, en Cartagena, desde una perspectiva histórica, es el objetivo principal de este articulo.

    Se analiza la problemática urbana cartagenera en relación a la singular pieza de la estación ferroviaria, desde su implantación en el XIX hasta la oportunidad actual que brinda su adecuación a la alta velocidad. Con tal fin se exponen tres momentos decisivos de su construcción:

    - La estación en el proyecto de Ensanche de 1896.

    - La construcción de la terminal de pasajeros y su unión con el casco histórico a través de la calle de la estación (1904, 1906 y 1912).

    - El proceso abierto de renovación urbana en la primera década del siglo XXI, de las instalaciones ferroviarias y del barrio de la estación de manera conjunta2.

    En el último apartado se apuntan los beneficios de la posición central de la estación tanto para la ciudad como para el servicio ferroviario.

    The main objective of this article is to describe, from a historical perspective, the adequate relation between the local rail network system and the city -the centrality of the rail station and its connection with the neighborhoods of its surroundings- at Cartagena.

    The article analyzes Cartagena's urban issues taking into consideration the singularity of Cartagena's railway station, from its opening in the nineteenth century until the current opportunity provided by its upgrade to high speed rail networks. To that end, three decisive moments of its evolution are narrated as follows: 1 The station within the 1896 Ensanche's draft context, 2 The passenger terminal building and its connection with the historicalcity center by Station Street (1904, 1906 and 1912), 3 the open process for urban renovation in the first decade of the century, regarding railway facilities together with station district.

    The last chapter highlights the possible benefits of the station’s central location upon both the city and rail service.
