    El propósito de este ensayo es analizar algunos de los aspectos constructivos de la solución Puente y examinar las conclusiones alcanzadas en 1995 sobre la viabilidad de dicha solución.

    tras haber quedado relegada durante décadas, la solución Puente del proyecto del Enlace del Estrecho de Gibraltar ha sido rescatada como alternativa para cubrir la distancia entre los dos continentes después de haberse detectado recientemente algún obstáculo en las capas inferiores de los terrenos del emplazamiento, anunciando nuevos aspectos geotécnicos a abordar.

    Dado el nivel actual de desarrollo alcanzado por la solución Túnel, la solución Puente, que data de 20 años atrás, necesita ser actualizada en toda su extensión para poder así equipararse con aquélla.

    Además de incorporar las nuevas tendencias presentes en el estado del arte en el diseño de estructuras, la solución Puente necesita también una actualización en sus procedimientos constructivos para incorporar todas las potencialidades que ofrecen: (1) los medios auxiliares; (2) la maquinaria; y (3), las numerosas y nuevas ideas que, provenientes de otros sectores distintos que el de las obras públicas, han sido adoptadas en el campo de la construcción. Asimismo, sería igualmente necesario tomas en consideración el incesante desarrollo de la ciencia de los materiales, que supone un constante incremento tanto en los niveles de resistencia como en el número de características que dichos materiales presentan.

    The aim of this essay is to address some of the aspects of the Bridge alternative and to examine the concluions reached back in 1995 over the feasibility of such a solution.

    Although having been left aside for decades, the Bridge Solution of the Strait of Gibraltar Crossing Project has been brought back to life as an available alternative to close the gap between the two continents, being the reason to have recently detected some impediment down into the lower layers fo the site laying grounds. All of which has revealed further geotechnical issues to tackle.

    Given the corrent level of development the Tunnel solution has reached, the 20-year-old Bridge solution needs to be fully updated in order to catch up with the former.

    As well as taking into consideration the new trends present in the state of the art on design of structures, the Bridge solution would also entail updating construction procedures if it is to incorporate all the potentialities offered by: (1) related tools; (2) machinery; and (3), many new ideas which, coming from distinct industrial sectors other than the public works´, have worked their way through to the construction field. Furthermore, it woukd be necessary to bear in mind the ceaseless development materials science is going through, which involves constant increases in both levels of resilience and number of characteristics such materials present.
