O olhar do turista britânico: história e autenticidade nas representações de Portugal nos livros de viagens, 1950-2000

    O turismo pode ser entendido como um fenómeno social multidimensional onde os livros de viagens têm um papel fundamental na estruturação da experiência turística, funcionando como mediadores entre a identidade do local e a representação de determinado espaço turístico. Utilizando como fonte os livros de viagens britânicos editados na 2ª metade do século XX, a presente investigação analisa a representação de Portugal, concentrando-se na relação entre História e Autenticidade.

    A nossa investigação demonstra que a fixação pelo passado é,sem dúvida, uma das marcas da representação de Portugal.

    Mais, os livros de viagens esforçam-se por elaborar uma interpretação da realidade que tende a maquilhar o presente de modo a preservar a sua função estética: é o culto do very typical.

    Tourism can be understood as a multidimensional social phenomenon where the travel books have a key role in the structuration of the tourist experience, working as mediators between the local identity and the representation of the touristic space. Using British travel books published in the 2nd half of the twentieth century as a source, this article analyses the representation of Portugal, focusing on the relationship between history and authenticity.

    Our research shows that the fixation on the past is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the representation of Portugal.

    Moreover, the travel books strive to develop an interpretation of reality that tends to make up the present in order to preserve its aesthetic function: this is, truly, the cult of the “very typical”.
