As personagens estrangeiras são recorrentes na literatura portuguesa do século XVIII, nomeadamente na dramática, atendendo a um rico repertório teatral que reflecte diversas vertentes sociais da época. É neste âmbito que a personagem do brasileiro assenta menos na nacionalidade e mais na vivência de uma realidade estranha à metrópole, com vista à obtenção de vantagens económicas que fizessem a diferença no regresso à pátria. O presente artigo tem por intuito a análise de alguns traços característicos atribuídos à figura do brasileiro, sobretudo, enquanto "torna-viagem", na metrópole portuguesa, no século XVIII, através do exercício de leitura de três textos de teatro, que nos dão a (re)conhecer a visão estereotipada de que eram alvo. A deslegitimação cultural lograda condicionava, por um lado, a inevitável acção de influências brasileiras na metrópole, mas, por outro, criava condições para a discussão em torno de um novo protagonista na paisagem social de setecentos.

Foreign characters are numerous in 18th Century Porruguese Literature, mainly in plays, which are part of a rich theatrical repertoire enhancing the many social dimensions of the time. ln this context, the Brazilian character is hardly determined by nationality but by the alienating reality strange to the metropolis, in order to obtain economic advantages that would make a difference back in the mainland. Therefore, this paper aims to depict some major characteristics associated to the Brazilian native in the Portuguese mainland, through the reading of three 18th Century plays, proving the stereotyped vision they were submitted to. The cultural discredit thus resultant was, on one hand, an obstacle to the widespread of Brazilian influences in Portuguese Mainland, but, on the other hand, settled the discussion and debate about a new leading figure in 18th Century's social landscape.
