  El artículo tiene el objetivo de explicar por qué y cómo el bandolerismo, la violencia, el perdón y la paz son conceptos complementarios en el Antiguo régimen del Mediterráneo occidental y católico. tras reconstruir el debate historiográfico en la primera parte del texto, en la segunda el autor intenta ofrecer al lector su personal interpretación sobre la evolución del fenómeno entre los siglos xvI y xvII, sin perder de vista la comparación con otras realidades europeas y teniendo en cuenta cómo los cambios sociales interactúan con las políticas represivas.

  this article analyses why and how banditry, violence, forgiveness and peace are complementary concepts in the Catholic West Mediterranean Ancient regime. the essay is consists of two parts. In the first one, the purpose is to reconstruct the historiographical de- bate; in the second one, the author gives his personal interpretation about the evolution of the phenomenon between 16th and 17th centuries, comparing different European realities and considering how social changes interact with repressive policies.
