    Ya desde finales del siglo XIX se detecta la confluencia de intereses muy diversos (principalmente demográficos, regeneracionistas y economicistas) sobre la función maternal. Esta situación se prolongará durante la primera mitad de la centuria pasada. Ello acabará convirtiendo a la labor maternal en una cuestión social. En el presente artículo se pretende poner de manifiesto la importancia que tuvo la intervención de los médicos en todo ese proceso. Para ello se analizan diversos textos que reflejan el pensamiento de aquellos sanitarios especialmente preocupados por el mejoramiento de la raza. Este análisis evidencia el interés sanitarista hacia las mujeres. Como telón de fondo se trata de poner de manifiesto la perspectiva de género que se esconde tras ese interés.

    From the end of the 19th century is detected the confluence of different interests (mainly demographic, regenerationists and economists) on maternal function. This situation will continue during the first half of the last century. This will end up becoming the maternal work a social issue. This article intends to show the importance that had the intervention of the doctors in the process. This discusses various texts that reflect the thinking of those especially concerned about the improvement of the breed. This analysis demonstrates the interest towards women sanitary. As a backdrop it is to highlight the gender perspective that lies behind this interest.
