  • Resumen
    • Jules Hardouin-Mansart and the interior decoration of the Dôme des Invalides. The architect in command, the design and the relation between the arts.

Of the three religious building sites directed by Jules Hardouin-Manstart, the Dôme des Invalides was the first to be completed and the only one that he saw to completion before his death in 1708. The in-depth study of archival sources and the drawings from the Robert de Cotte collection (BNF) leads to the reconsideration of the role of the "premier architecte du roi" in the invention and execution of the interior decoration. Very many sculptors worked after the drawings that his agency provided for all of the components of the sculpted decoration. François Girardon only played a secondary role. The supervision of the sculptors also included a tight control of price and of the quality of execution of the works. Finally, this study analyzes Hardouin-Mansart's decorative conception, based on a visual equilibrium between sculpture and painting, as well as a pragmatic use of the iconographic traditions of church art.
