El presente documento describe el origen de algunas especialidades acorde a los momentos históricos. Se toma como referencia la propuesta de Eric Hobsbawm acerca de un siglo XIX largo y un siglo XX corto, según este autor el siglo XIX comienza históricamente con el estallido de la revolución Francesa 1789, y finalizó con el inicio de la Primera Guerra Mundial 1914 y el siglo XX nuevo, que inicia con el término del bloque soviético en 1991 y se continua hasta este momento. La práctica médica y su especialización van de la mano con estos cambios políticos-sociales y económicos, lo que nos lleva a reflexionar sobre ¿qué tipo de especialista médico será necesario en los próximos años?
This paper describes the origin of some medical specialties according to historical moments. We take as reference Eric Hobsbawm's proposal about nineteenth century “long” and twentieth century “short”, according to this author the nineteenth century begins historically with the outbreak of the French Revolution 1789 and ended with the onset of World War 1914; finally the “new” twentieth century which beginning with the end of the Soviet bloc in 1991 and continues until now. Medical practice and expertise go together with political-social and economic changes, which leads us to reflect on what type of medical specialist will need in the coming years?
