Turismo e o dinamismo económico regional: evidência da região do Algarve

    This paper analyses the evolution of the economic structure and the tourist activity in the Algarve between 1995 and 2003 by applying the shift-share analysis among all regions of the country and within the region of Algarve.

    The central objective is to conclude whether the regional growth has been benefited by the region’s productive structure.

    The results suggest that the Algarve has captured positive dividends from its productive structure due to its specialization in the most dynamic sectors of the country and by getting important comparative advantages relatively to other regions in the sectors directly and indirectly connected to tourism activity. However, the within region analysis suggests the existence of regional disparities motivated by different growth levels since the sectors directly connected to tourism have behaved as threats to growth due to their low dynamism levels.

    Este trabalho analisa a evolução da estrutura económica da região do Algarve e o posicionamento da atividade turística entre 1995 e 2003 através da aplicação da análise Shift-share aos níveis inter-regional e intrarregional, tendo como objetivo central averiguar se o crescimento da região tem sido beneficiado pela sua estrutura produtiva. Os resultados sugerem que, no contexto nacional, o Algarve tem tirado dividendos positivos da sua estrutura económica, quer pela especialização nos ramos mais dinâmicos da economia nacional, quer pela existência de importantes vantagens comparativas relativamente às restantes regiões nos seus pólos de especialização nos quais se encontram os setores ligados direta e indiretamente à atividade turística. Contudo, ao nível da região são identificadas disparidades regionais motivadas por diferentes níveis de crescimento dos concelhos, tendo-se concluído que os ramos diretamente ligados ao turismo têm-se apresentado como ameaças devido ao seu fraco dinamismo de crescimento.
