    En la actualidad, el término de paisaje urbano se suele asociar al de ciudad. No obstante, para ello, es necesario considerar la multitud de factores y componentes que la convierten en un lugar provocador de sentimientos y afectos que puede ser definido como paisaje. Partiendo de esta consideración, la propuesta que presentamos expondrá la utilidad de la iconografía urbana para entender el significado y la evolución del concepto en la cultura occidental. En este caso, ofrecemos un estudio centrado en las ciudades portuarias atlánticas del Norte de España. Sus testimonios plásticos nos acercan a sus hitos urbanos más peculiares e identitarios, convirtiéndose, así, en una valiosa herramienta para entender y valorizar las peculiaridades de cada paisaje y motivar el necesario debate sobre las ciudades que queremos hoy y en nuestro futuro inmediato.

    Nowadays the term of townscape is often associated with the city. However, for that, it is necessary to consider the multiple factors and components which turn it into a provocative place of feelings and emotions that can be defined as landscape.

    Starting from this premise, this paper expounds the utility of the urban iconography for understanding the meaning and evolution of the concept of townscape. In this case, we present an investigation focused on the Atlantic port cities located in the north of Spain. The analysis of the plastic representations of them has allowed discerning and claiming the conservation of the most particular and identifying milestones of these urban scenarios. Its knowledge and study may be a useful instrument for understanding and valuing the peculiarities of each landscape and for encouraging the necessary debate about the cities we want now and in our next coming future.
