Resumen de Industrial Heritage and Urban Regeneration in Italy: the Formation of New Urban Landscapes

Massimo Preite

  • The content of the paper concerns the role of planning in the programs for urban regeneration in Italy. At the beginning the regeneration plans were not interested to the reuse of former industrial structures because of their negative image: public authorities and local community didnt express any attention to the conservation of the industrial remains. More recently, during the 90ties, a new perception of the productive buildings and mills in terms of cultural heritage raised up. Industrial turned from an obstacle to be erased into an opportunity to be exploited in order to increase urban quality and produce new urban landscape.

By means a comparative analysis on some relevant experiences carried out in the last years it is possible to evaluate the interactive profile of the planning procedures that have been adopted, an innovative relationship between general plan and single projects, a new balance between conservation and transformation in the enhancement projects of industrial heritage, and the features of an unexpected and new urban landscape
