Resumen de Inclusivity is not 'nice' -- it's critical

Margaret Taylor

  • Leader Today The Lawyer publishes its second report on diversity in the legal profession. And some of the findings make for pretty sobering reading.

Try this for starters: when we published our first report five years ago 22 per cent of all partners at the top 100 firms were female. Now, after much pontificating about female targets and the benefits of networking, the proportion is -- go on, have a guess -- that's right, 22 per cent.

Here's another: how many of you are depressed? Dyslexic? Hard of hearing? What proportion of lawyers at the top 100 firms do you think admit to having a disability of any kind? I'll tell you: less than 1 per cent. Don't even ask about what firms think constitutes a disability support programme.

Then there are ethnic minorities, LGBTs and those who didn't pay for their education, all of whom are seriously under-represented in law firm partnerships
