Resumen de One partnership, many systems

Yun Kriegler

  • President Xi Jinping's recent visit to Britain has supposedly opened a "golden era" in the relationship between the countries. Already, some in the UK legal fraternity have been reaping the benefits of the growing links with China.

Ashurst, for example, will advise state-owned Chinese nuclear group CGN on the £18bn agreement to build the UK's first nuclear power station in 20 years, an agreement reached during Xi's visit. It is believed the UK firm picked up the relationship through a recommendation by Chinese ally Guantao, the firms having previously advised the group on other transactions.

Like Ashurst, many UI< and international firms have been working with their Chinese counterparts for years. Although they have acknowledged Chinese firms' rapid rise of late, the prevailing view continues to be that these firms are not financially integrated, lack real partnership and that most operate effectively as barristers' chambers, where only costs are shared and individuals or teams work independently under one brand
