ON July 10 this year, procedures were put in place on a farm near Preston to manage and contain a suspected incident of highly pathogenic avian influenza in laying hens (VR, July 18, 2015, vol 177, pp 57-58).
A vet from the APHA was quickly deployed and, within three days, tests at the APHA's Weybridge laboratory confirmed the disease. The hens were culled humanely.
This was the third case of avian influenza in the UK over the past 12 months, following an incident of highly pathogenic avian influenza in Driffield, Yorkshire, in November 2014, and a case of low pathogenic avian influenza in Hampshire in January 2015.
