RESPONSES to a consultation on possible changes to the system for veterinary disease surveillance in Scotland have indicated strong opposition to a proposal to close the disease surveillance centre (DSC) at Inverness.
The consultation was carried out by Scotland's Rural College (SRUC) between June 1 and July 10 to gather opinions on a range of proposals for changing the network of DSCs in Scotland (VR, June 6, 2015, vol 176, p 583). As well as inviting the views of stakeholders, SRUC held meetings with staff, local veterinary practice clients, farmers, crofters, members of the Scottish Parliament and other interested parties. A review of the responses, concerns and suggestions made during the consultation period was published by SRUC on August 5.
Inverness One of the specific options for change proposed by SRUC was closure of the Inverness DSC. SRUC suggested a number of alternatives, including training and supporting veterinary practitioners to carry out postmortem examinations on farm or at some other convenient location; carcase transportation to facilities in Aberdeenshire, Perth and Thurso; and building a new postmortem examination-only facility.
