Resumen de Companion animals: Insurer calls for clearer labelling of pet treats

  • PET insurance provider Direct Line is calling for clearer labelling of treats for dogs and cats to better inform owners about what they are feeding their pets. Research by the company has shown that, on a gram-for-gram basis, many dog and cat treats have a calorie content similar to popular fast food items.

The insurance company says that its research, which investigated the nutritional value of some of the UK's most popular pet treats, found that the calorific content of the treats varied widely. It reports that, on a gram-for-gram basis, Dreamies cat treats were found to contain approximately 5 per cent more calories than a glazed ring Dunkin Donut, while a similar comparison showed that Bonio dog treats contained approximately 53 per cent more calories than a McDonald's Big Mac. It points out that the recommended daily calorie intake for an adult labrador retriever is 1095 calories if it is exercised normally. ‘One Bonio dog biscuit contains 78 calories, which works out as 7 per cent of a labrador's daily allowance,’ it says.
