‘IN Scotland we have a strong and well-deserved reputation as a world leader in animal health and welfare – that it is well deserved is largely to the credit of the people sitting in this room.’ So said Richard Lochhead, Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and Environment in Scotland, responding to a speech given by the BVA President, John Blackwell, at the BVA Scottish dinner, held at the Scottish Parliament building in Edinburgh on May 13. The annual dinner is one of four that the BVA holds in each region of the UK each year. The aim is to bring issues of importance to the veterinary profession to the attention of policymakers, the agriculture industry and others with an interest in animal welfare.
Scotland, continued Mr Lochhead, was extremely fortunate to have ‘the people, the expertise, and the organisations’ to deliver its ambitions for the best possible animal health and welfare.
