  • THE achievements of the African Small Companion Animal Network (AFSCAN) in the year since it was launched had exceeded all expectations, said Gabriel Varga, chairman of the AFSCAN board, speaking at a press briefing held during the BSAVA congress in Birmingham on April 10. The briefing also marked the launch of the latest phase of the project – the announcement of support and funding for scientific research projects in Africa.

    The AFSCAN project is being developed by the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) Foundation, with the support of Zoetis and a consortium of other interested parties. It aims to facilitate sustainable capacity building in the African veterinary community to enhance quality in small companion animal medicine with a One Health perspective, and comprises four key elements:

    ▪ Formation of new small animal veterinary associations in African countries;

    ▪ Distance learning education;

    ▪ Support for and coordination of rabies control programmes; and ▪ Support/funding of selected scientific projects in Africa.
